Filming took place extensively on location in New York City, utilizing landmarks such as Central Park, the Belvedere Castle, the Toy "R" Us Times Square flagship store, and the Manhattan Midtown area. To give the actors proper sightlines during filming, the production used physical puppets, clay models, and colored dots to represent where the digital Smurfs would be added during post-production.
